Packets of LifeStraw Family await distribution by members of A.C.T.E.D., the french N.G.O. in a camp near Port Au Prince (the camp has no other distinguishing name). LifeStraw is .a simple and inexpensive water purification device which can provide approximately 18,000 liters of safe, potable water for a family -- enough to last almost three years. The distribution was being held in conjunction with Vestergaard Frandsen, a private company which produces the LifeStraw Family. The company also makes a personal unit which can provide access to approximately 1000 liters of clean water to an individual. An outbreak of cholera originating in the Artibonite region north of Haiti's capital has heightened health concerns related to water and sanitation for the nation.
